The purpose of National Poppy day is to bring greater awareness of this symbolic flower and to honor the fallen.
After World War 1, the poppy flourished in Europe. Scientists attributed the flower’s growth to soils becoming enriched with lime from rubble left by the war. From the dirt and mud, a beautiful flower grew. During this time, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, M.D. wrote the wartime poem, In Flanders Fields, and the red poppy came to symbolize remembrance.
