ViacomCBS Veterans Network attend the 2021 Student Veterans of America National Conference

Updated: Feb 23, 2021

Two days of non-stop networking, professional development, special guest speakers and fun activities! What more can one ask for when attending the Student Veterans of America National Conference? Our answer: More time!

In recent years, the National Conference (NatCon) was held in-person at places like Disney World in Orlando, FL (2019) or LA (2020). This time, due to the pandemic, it was held virtually, to great success. This year’s NatCon was not your average online meeting. The conference was surprisingly and pleasantly interactive, with fellow attendees networking via the chat box, breakout rooms which consisted of different select topics important to the community and the main stage where presenters such as surprise guest, First Lady Jill Biden, made an appearance. But that was not the only highlight; even country music singer Jimmie Allen graced the stage to entertain the veteran attendees.

Although virtual, the event truly spilled out into the home. “There aren’t many conferences where just showing up instills a sense of family and community, but NatCon is unique in that way: bringing together all the most ambitious student-veteran change makers, and the most supportive of corporate partners”, said Melanie Corinne, SVA Alumna and Social Media Strategist at ViacomCBS Veterans Network. Everyone in attendance was there in solidarity of honoring the sacrifice of service, and to help our heroes live up to their full potential.

Betty Diaz, Director, Programs & Operations, ViacomCBS Veterans Network said, “As a first-time attendee, and on behalf of a prospective employer, I was very impressed with the virtual platform used for the national conference. I enjoyed attending the breakout sessions. The Employment Landscape for Veterans and Personal Branding were two of my favorites. Well done, NatCon! I look forward to attending again and hopefully in person.”

“This year‘s NatCon utilized modern technology tied with tried and true, traditional conferencing and networking opportunities. Events such as these, allow up-and-coming student veterans the opportunity to connect to their incoming civilian world where many employers are looking for new employees with such abilities to adapt, overcome and improvise; especially in this new socially distanced era we find ourselves in. Many Student Veterans have direct experience applying those skills across all branches and their former military occupations. This year’s conference allowed for the opportunity for both sides of the hiring line to connect, share, and ultimately begin a new chapter for seeking employees and employers alike. I am very grateful for this opportunity and to have learned from such a wide array of Industry experts and fellow veterans. I look forward to participating again next year”, said Will Kelso, US Army Veteran, KELSOmedia

ViacomCBS Veterans Network is grateful to the Student Veterans of America Staff who worked tireless to bring this event together, and service the unique needs of our student veteran community. We are proud to join with SVA and support their mission to uplift student veterans to meet their full potential.
