ViacomCBS Veterans Network Honors Memorial Day

Updated: May 30, 2021

Memorial Day is a solemn and special day: We come together as a nation to reflect on the legacy of our military service members who gave their lives in the line of duty. This Memorial Day the ViacomCBS Veterans Network crew was so full of support that we produced three gorgeous tribute videos to honor the memory of our fallen heroes.

The first, posted Friday May 28th, was created with care by Mike Maas, Executive Producer, KCBS Los Angeles. His team picked a fitting quote against a striking montage; “Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it, it flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.” See the tribute here. The video has also been featured on The Military Channel and The History Channel on Pluto TV.

We say often that “freedom is not free,” but it is on Memorial Day that we collectively, as a nation, contemplate the cost. There are no words that can express the depths of our gratitude to our brothers and sisters who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of service, but we will always remember them as the national heroes and protectors of freedom that they are.

On Memorial Day, Monday May 31st, we have additional tribute videos. One created by the passionate and talented team at CBS Sports, led up by ViacomCBS VetNet member and Director of Media Production, Matt Kushner. The Memorial Day Tribute declares in a homage;

To those who made the ultimate sacrifice; who displayed unwavering courage and determination, put country above all else; you are heroes; we are forever indebted to you; you inspire us; your impact is everlasting; we will always remember; those we have lost; and honor their memory, which lives on forever.” See the tribute here.

Our second video, posted on the same day, May 31st, was created by our Chief Veteran Officer, Richard M. Jones. In this Tribute, we acknowledge that “Freedom has a profound and great price. Memorial Day, is the day that’s set aside to remember with gratitude and pride all those who served and died for our country and our freedom.” Our gratitude must be as great as their sacrifice. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. See the tribute here.

The lasting legacy of these sacrifices, have come to define our American experience. Everything we know and love today can be attributed to the brave and selfless men and women throughout our country’s history who held the line and gave their all. This Memorial Day will be an acknowledgment of our profound gratitude and debt to our fallen heroes, but it is also a celebration of their love, passion, and dedication. We will carry the spirit of their sacrifice with us, as we spend time with our families, and in our communities. Our Fallen Heroes remain with us in memory, inspiring the best in us for years to come.

To all our Fallen Heroes, and to our brothers and sisters in service who left us too soon, and paid the ultimate price: Thank you for your service, and rest easy.
