Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team, USA PATRIOTS

Updated: Jun 26, 2019

CBS Veterans Network members alongside their family and friends attended the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team, USA PATRIOTS, game on Friday, June 21st and Saturday, June 22nd in Long Island, New York. On Friday, the USA PATRIOTS played against CBS Sports’ and Showtime’s Inside the NFL’s Boomer Esiason (and his All-Stars). Saturday, the team played against Long Island All-Stars. This is the sixth year the team plays in New York. The Team travels the country playing able-bodied teams in competitive and exhibition softball games, bringing their unique brand of softball, courage, and inspiration to communities nationwide to raise awareness and fundraise. Their primary reason for fundraising, outside of the Veteran space, is to support their annual Kids Camp where they bring in 20 children (between 8-12 years old) with amputations for a week-long camp. The team is comprised of competitive, athletic veterans who have lost limbs in combat and non-combat related injuries. While some are still in the service, others are attending college and others have moved on to new careers.

“I am so happy CBS Veterans Network gave me the opportunity to support our military veterans by attending the fundraiser softball game played by the Wounded Warriors Amputee Softball Team, USA PATRIOTS, versus the Boomer Esiason All-Stars.  The game itself was a lot of fun watching these amazing Wounded Warrior athletes perform on the softball diamond after overcoming some very serious injuries, but it was also a great treat to have a chance to meet and speak with some of these veterans and their family members.   These Wounded Warriors really are the best of us—happy to support!”, says Mickey Carter, Senior Vice President, Television Networks Distribution, CBS Network

“One of my first assignments at CBS was producing a series on our troops called ‘Fallen Heroes.’ It gave me a life-long appreciation for the sacrifices our soldiers make. When the opportunity to support our veterans playing in this softball game came up, I jumped at the chance. I am forever thankful for their service to our country.”, says Bacchus Johnson, Manager Captioning & Video Description, CBS Network

“It was a pleasure attending the games this weekend and truly an honor to witness humility, leadership and above all graciousness of each team member. They are transforming lives everywhere they go by inspiring veterans and civilians and raising awareness and funds for a great cause! I’m inspired by their determination”, says Betty Diaz, CBS Veterans Network, East Coast Director

“Thank you CBS Veterans Network for showing your support.  I always view the event as simply hosted by “we the people” says Joe Bartumioli, a sole volunteer who organized both events in New York, for the sixth year in a row and has been volunteering with the team, since its  inception over seven years ago. “Every time the WWAST comes here to play, it is an inspirational event for everyone who attended.  It is an incredible weekend full of Celebration, Inspiration and Motivation!”
